This occasion is held on August 17 every year at the riverbed of the Abukuma River which flows the south side of Fukushima prefectural government. It has been done before W.W.II.(excepting during W.W.II). This is a traditional annual event. It makes us feel that summer is about end. The spirits of the dead, who are said to return to their homes with sacred fires are floated on the lanterns with the sutra recitation by the priests. It's getting cooler in the morning and evening. Summer is almost over. There's also a fireworks display.
